Zac de Vries Leads Push to Legalize E-Scooters in Saanich
Island News, Sep 21, 2022
Saanich councillors Zac de Vries and Colin Plant are pushing to bring e-scooters into the district legally, putting forward a motion to join the province's e-scooter pilot program. De Vries has argued that legalizing e-scooters would support Saanich's climate goals by giving residents another way to replace car trips.
The push connects to a broader set of road safety reforms under discussion. Among the changes a committee is expected to weigh for a revised motion: renaming the Motor Vehicle Act as the Road Safety Act, a new set of rules and guidelines for cyclists, letting municipalities set a default speed limit on unsigned highways, establishing a province-wide 30 km/h limit for local streets without a centreline, and banning right turns on red lights at intersections across B.C.
