Saanich council voted 6-2 on Aug. 17 to reject a proposed 349-unit development at Edgelow Street and Finnerty Road in Gordon Head, near UVic. The project would have added much-needed rental housing, including two- and three-bedroom units, to an area with near-zero vacancy rates. Council rejected it largely over a technicality involving "transit-oriented area" boundaries and lot consolidation, prompting debate about balancing housing needs with community concerns. Councillors Teale Phelps Bondaroff and Zac de Vries were the only two to oppose the rejection.
